Buying a ticket for cinemas is a different experience, but what if you crave playing games, watching some TV shows, or an old movie? That's when you realize that having a spectacular sound system like Sonos Arc or Bose Smart Soundbar 900 is close to a must!

Alas! Dolby Atmos is the name that's popped up in our minds. And why wouldn't that be? A single-piece soundbar that's powered by Dolby Atmos sound technology and comes from Sonos or Bose can be your choice. Both of these speakers offer an alluring sound experience. The quality is pure, the package is well-equipped, and the accessories are in a never-ending competition. But which one is suitable for you? On what speaker should you invest your money?

We are talking about the easiest phase here. While the core components of these soundbars are not readily available, the prices are high. In simple terms, supply is low, and demand is high. But how much?

Both of the soundbars are aesthetically beautiful. But since we are here for some unbiased differentiation, let's start with the Bose Smart Soundbar 900.

You know well what an attractive beauty really is. The version 900 by Bose possesses such a design that it makes people go in awe. We consider this soundbar to be more aesthetically sound. The measurements define its body as two inches tall with 42 inches wide. There is a grill (metal) on the front that reaches the glass-top. Such an incredible single-piece soundbar by Bose is hard to find anywhere else.

The 900 is quite simple in certain areas, most notably its onboard digital display, which is nothing more than a flashing white LED pattern. It does, however, include a few controls on top, as well as a fully functional app that allows you to control things like basic EQ, smart assistants, and grouping with other Bose speakers to form a multi-room sound system, among other things. It also comes with a separate remote, unlike Sonos (check out Sonos arc review). You'll largely be utilizing your TV's remote if you connect via the HDMI ARC/eARC port, but it's a good backup.

You are waiting for Sonos, right? Well, Sonos also got a brilliant design and useful controls. You can't describe its quality in words. Instead, a lot of customers commend the utility of Sonos as one of the best on this planet. But Sonos troubled some customers.

The shape of Sonos Arc resembles more of a log than a soundbar. The height is over three inches, and the stretch is around 45 inches. When you place it somewhere nice, it just doesn't give the vibe Bose 900 gives.

But that's alright as Sonos Arc's performance is quite enjoyable. From the design and controls perspective, the Sonos Arc got only an LED display on the front to display what's happening. And that's it.

In terms of controls, the Sonos app is perhaps more feature-rich than Bose's, and the Arc is just as easy to use using your TV remote for basic functions like power and volume. Both soundbars may be controlled with voice commands using a variety of smart assistants.

There are more parallels than differences, as we'll discuss throughout, but Bose's Smart Soundbar 900 wins this round because of its advantage in analog controls and a more elegant design.

Sonos Arc Features

When you see the Dolby Atmos soundbar's features and connections, you barely find any differences. It's because these two pieces got a lot in common. Let's see what's similar first.

  • Colors: Black, White
  • Wi-Fi options: Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, multi-room audio
  • Wired connection: Ethernet, HDMI ARC/eARC, optical input (Sonos requires adapter)
  • Smart features: Amazon Alexa or built-in Google Assistant
  • Dolby Audio decoding: Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD

So much in common tbh! The live streaming and shared network options in the common apps make the sound system more efficient. The usability has been made easy. Also, both of them are compatible with the Dolby Atmos sound control and the surrounding system.

The syncing capacity is brilliant. You can connect with your speakers inside your home at any range. But here is the line. Sonos provides multiple speaker sets, while Bose limits the collection beginning at $349.

Another difference is Bose 900 gives you Bluetooth connectivity. Sonos doesn't. If you are wondering how things will work then, platforms like Apple Music and Spotify work on Wi-Fi. So the matter is solved here. Don't worry about Sonos because it also gives you options like Tidal and Amazon Music.

There are no additional HDMI inputs on each bar. Because you'll need to connect Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, or other components to your TV directly, taking up valuable inputs, they're best suited for folks who stream most of their entertainment online. This may limit your ability to source uncompressed audio from various devices, depending on how old your TV is, albeit anyone with a basic HDMI ARC input can stream Dolby Atmos. You may need more information regarding this section.

When it comes to Blu-rays, Sonos' Arc soundbar has rudimentary DTS decoding (up to 5.1), whereas Bose's bar does not. If you have a lot of older material mixed in 5.1 around the house, this may influence your decision, but since you can't plug physical media into the bar directly, your TV also plays a part in the compatibility. Furthermore, neither bar provides DTS:X, Dolby Atmos' main competitor.

It's impossible to call this one. The Arc has additional options to connect with other speakers and decode your physical media, whereas the Bose bar has Bluetooth and an optical connection built-in. We'll refer to it as a new tie.

Sonos Arc Performance

Now the truth will reveal itself. Apart from all the similarities, the performance of both these soundbars has some differences. There's no denying that Bose's bar is a powerful performer, especially considering its smaller size and lack of drivers compared to Sonos' system. Its sound quality is actually exceptional, with depth and perspective that elevates everything from brass instruments to gunfire to speech. It's a significant improvement over your TV speakers, as well as several lower-quality outboard audio options.

Although the Smart Soundbar 900's smaller upfiring speakers struggle to create powerful overhead effects, the system excels at bouncing virtual effects around the room, resulting in impressively immersive sound given its size. The bundled microphone headset helps with this by calibrating the sound to your room—Sonos' technology requires an iOS device to do so.

However, the fact that I keep referring to the size of the 900s in this comparison is telling. Simply, it lacks the overall strength and sound extension of the Arc. The Arc, for its part, offers plenty of depth and superior sound for all of your cinematic and musical excursions, including Amazon Audio Unlimited's recent inclusion of Dolby Atmos music streaming. When sourcing Dolby Atmos content, it goes even farther with remarkably powerful bass for a bar of its size, as well as more distinct overhead sound from the bar's upfiring drivers, to create a believable, hemispheric soundstage.

While you can add a subwoofer to either bar for a more immersive movie experience, the Sonos Arc performs better as an all-in-one sound solution thanks to its more drivers (four more than Bose's bar), larger bass, and overall more stunning Dolby Atmos immersion. That's why we call the Sonos Arc our favorite soundbar.

Want to buy the Sonos Arc premium sound bar?

The competition is close and it's hard to crown only one. But since we talk in numbers, Sonos Arc has won the game. Yay!

While both bars provide outstanding premium sound, the Arc is the preferred option for those who want a single bar to rule them all. It's simple to use, integrates well with additional speakers (grouped or in a surround arrangement), and comes with a comprehensive app to control it all. Most importantly, even without a wireless subwoofer, it delivers the auditory impact you'd expect from a single bar.

Bose's Smart Soundbar 900, on the other hand, is a powerful system that has the majority of the above functions, as well as more methods to connect and a slimmer, more elegant design that's much simpler to put under your TV and on your console. Its only significant flaw is that on its own, it isn't quite as cinematic or compelling.

Now it's all here to decide. Still, you can go for the other option depending on your need. But if you consider everything, your mind and heart will satisfy with Sonos Arc.

Utterly pathetic system that never works

Utterly pathetic system that works perhaps 5% of the time.. When it works its great but its so rare that it does that there's really no point in having this system. I so wish I hadn't spent £1.5k on the terrible system. Please, please don't waste your money on this utter garbage. Customer services are no help and suggest that the Nintendo switch might be too close to the sub - that's why it constantly looses connection to all 4 speakers, or maybe our router isn't configured correctly - despite all of other devices working flawlessly.. My next step is go to trading standards as this system is not fit for purpose but Sonos refuse to give me money back.

Does not work with Google according to…

Does not work with Google according to them it is because Google copied their product. Well I do not care about their relationship with Google but by extension they do not care about their customers that own and have invested in Google's eco system. Overpriced when it can't do basic things. Sound bar is not bad but you don't have many option when you are looking for a white sound bar. Not gonna go into too much details in what I think of Sonos audio because it barely integrates with any of my home. Update sent an email to CEO but only a support rep replied. "Ultimately you are not required to keep an audio system which you're not satisfied with or doesn't fulfill how you'd like to use it." I love the response but sadly who do I return it to if past the 30 day window and not bought directly from them?

Faulty Products - Faulty Customer Service

Faulty Products - Faulty Customer Service Bought a Sonos Roam from Argos and a Roam Wireless 10W charger from Sonos. The Roam will not charge using wireless but charges OK with a direct USB. After spending about 1 hour on chat with Rares M at Sonos, he told me what I already knew - the products are faulty. The return to Sonos is complex and no one seems able to explain the UPS process for shipping from UK to Poland which is where Sonos wants it shipped. The Argos item is even harder. The Argos website asks you to telephone Sonos, which I did. As it was approaching 5pm the call handler wanted to go home, so ended my conversation ! So I am no nearer how top return the product to Argos. So, I have 2 useless products that I am currently unable to return. Don't ever buy Sonos. They look good but don't work and the customer support is non existent at both Sonos and Argos.

Zero stars if it was possible!

Zero stars if it was possible! Ordered a beam 2 on 22/04/22. Was told that no orders would be shipped until 3rd May. Fine, is what it is. I emailed on the 5th or 6th of May for an update. I received a response that my order will be shipped by the end of the day on the 6th. Nothing happened. Either a flat out lie or just pure incompetence, either way it's not good enough from a company this size! Emailed again on 9th and 10th May. They can't even be bothered to reply to my emails now. No information forthcoming on what is happening. Terrible, terrible customer service. Will probably cancel order and buy from a rival company. Probably sell my other Sonos products as well I'm so annoyed with the service. I never write reviews, but felt so strongly about how badly myself and by the sounds of it, other customers are being treated.

Shocking customer service!!!!

I ordered a Beam2 on 22/04/22 direct with Sonos on their trade up scheme (so have been a loyal customer for many years) and have been unable to get a delivery date due to them updating their system? After many emails back and forth and many broken promises, I phoned their Sales Support line today (10/05) only to be told my order had been cancelled along with hundreds of other customers on Saturday and that I should have had an email. I didn't. And IF I still wanted the item I will have to reorder it! If I hadn't invested thousands of pounds on other Sonos products over the years I would have hung up there and then. I asked if they could arrange the trade in transaction via John Lewis or another retailer and "the computer says no" response was all that I got. I have asked for my case to be escalated and a call back from a Manager, but I'll be surprised if that happens after the lack of service I have had so far. Great product if you can get it.

DO NOT BUY THIS COMPANY’S PRODUCTS IF YOU CARE ABOUT OUR PLANET. I rarely write reviews but have to break that habit for sonos. I have their equipment throughout the house, having spent c £3000 on it all. For years I have put up with their poor software and constant updates because the sound was good (when the software worked). But last year (or was it the year before, we all know how COVID has added a year to every time estimate) I suddenly could not upgrade their software as some of my kit had become ‘obsolete’. To keep ‘current’ with their software, I am being forced by sonos to buy new kit to replace the obsolete items. That’s half my system, currently. Sonos have chosen to design their software so that it renders their older hardware obsolete. In short, I now cannot add any new services to the system (amongst other issues). I could live with that, and have done so for this last year or two, but recently, BBC changed their ‘Sounds’ policy and the apps/services I’ve added to my sonos (Napster, Tuned-in, even Sonos itself) can’t play any of the BBC radio stations anymore. To listen to BBC radio thru any of my sonos (even the non-obsolete) I must add ‘BBC Sounds’ as a service. But I can only do this if I ‘upgrade’ the sonos software and that will mean spending c £1500 on replacing parts of my system; parts which are perfectly workable and produce lovely sound. What sort of chance does ‘save the planet’ have when the people running businesses like SONOS make decisions like this and force their customers to ‘self-obsolete’ and throw out their perfectly workable equipment. Shame on you SONOS. I repeat my opening comment. DO NOT BUY THIS COMPANY’S PRODUCTS.

High quality soundbars with outstounding audio.

I've owned the Sonos beam for some time now and have upgraded to the Arc. Both speakers are superb with excellent sound quality, and an easy and intuitive app. I would note your experience will be much better as an iPhone user as TruePlay isn't available on Andriod. (This is down to iPhones having standardized mics, whereas andriods do not.)

I have had nothing but problems from these absolutely terrible overpriced speakers. They were so overhyped and the software is so bad every time I need to interact with it to try to fix my Sonos system I loose a little piece of my soul. I literally feel like a victim after every interaction.

I am so surprised that I have to write…

I am so surprised that I have to write a review like this but the fact is that I do. I have bought Sonos throughout my house, this includes 4 soundbars, speakers, sub woofer and a Move. I decided to buy a Sonos Boost directly from Sonos instead of a 3rd party and it's been a total nightmare. The Boost came dead on arrival. I rang Sonos and they said its after support hours try live chat for a replacement, live chat person said ring back next week. I'm now on next week and still havent received any confirmation of a replacement and keep in mind they know I have a stack of Sonos products by looking at the app support logs. For a company that charges top dollar for their product the support has been bottom dollar. I emailed their CEO as their website has this option and have had no response either. A dead on arrival product should be replacement asap no questions asked, Sonos don't seem to understand this, they also don't seem to understand customer service.

Connection frustrations outweigh the great sound

These products have great sound but trying to connect to them is infuriating. Sometimes you can connect and sometimes the app can't find them. If I turn the Sonos 1 off at the plug I can only connect again with a full factory reset. Incredibly frustrating when all I want to do is listen to music.

Used to be great, not anymore.

We have had several speakers around our home for about 8 years, adding a speaker here and there as funds allowed and initially were very happy with the overall system and app. However since the new Sonos 2 controller came out, we have to use this as we have a mixture of speakers, the app is very selective on which speakers it picks up, and can vary from day to day. It is both frustrating and not easy to rectify. Following the Settings advice rarely helps. Sonos used to be a system I was excited to have and use, and when it works well I am thrilled, but now it is so temperamental it is not something I would recommend.

DO NOT buy this if you want to keep your sanity !!

I am honestly at my absolute wits end with this system!!! We have 5 speakers, an IKEA lamp and a boost and it just does not work. It CONSTANTLY cuts out, skips tracks, freezes or the speakers just vanish altogether from the app. Grouping all of the speakers together is completely impossible, which is particularly annoying as that was the main reason we bought it. Our WiFi signal is good but we have even gone to the hassle of having a booster added to our network just on the off chance it might help, sadly to no avail! I have tried contacting Sonos on multiple occasions via various communication methods and they never even bother to respond. Please do yourself a favour and AVOID this system like the plague. They market and sell as high end but they really are anything but… It is one of the worse bits of kit we have ever bought and instead of being able to listen to music from the expensive speakers we have dotted around the house, we are now largely reliant on a cheap Bluetooth speaker which we move around. It is honestly awful and I wish I could sell it, however I’m not that cruel to inflict the endless misery onto someone else. Sonos; (not that I’m holding out much hope) but please can you get back to me about this!

Terrible Tech Support

Sonos support have been good on simple problems in the past. But beware that their "diganostics" are so focussed on networking problems that they will run you ragged resetting your network and Sonos devices regardless of evidence to the contrary. I eventually resolved my Sonos S2 system's inability to play reliably by upgrading to a faster NAS even though this should not have been necessary. Sonos support were of no help, never took ownership of the problem (by following up) and appear to have no escalation procedure to deal with problems beyond the front line staff's technical expertise.

Saying Sonos’ tech support is appalling is in fact an understatement. It’s terrible!!!! No one seems to know what is going and all the advice I was given was contradictory. To add insult to injury they send products without all the necessary components and have no consideration for ones time. If you want no headache then don’t buy Sonos!!!

Sonos gear is brilliant - ignore the nay-sayers!

Well, I have a lot of Sonos kit all connected by wi-fi and a Sonos Boost. Most I have bought cheaply second hand and, whenever I have had issues, Sonos support have been brilliant. (Just bought 2 Roams, second hand and Sonos support helped me set them up on the new Sonos app, leaving all my 1st generation stuff running on the Sonos S1 app). A lot of problems reported on here (and on Social Media) appear to be down to wi-fi issues - a quick call to Sonos Support and they'll work fine I reckon! Or just sell me your gear!
